Welcome!

Welcome to Greek Keyline Blog 2019!

You have just crossed the river Styx and are ready to join Aeschylus and Euripides in a great line contest. Fortunately for you, you don't have to invent your own lines. Much of the time, you will just pick out a great line from whatever Greek writer we happen to be studying in History 440 this week and explain why this line is key to understanding the whole work or particularly worth remembering and applying to real life.

For today, I'd just like to make sure everyone in the class can post to the blog.  Please click on the "comment" button below.  Post here one of your favorite quotes--a line from one of your professors, a favorite novel or play, or (perhaps) from one of your fellow students.

Brek-ek-ek-ek, koax, koax....

  1. One of my favorite quotes is from the college basketball coach Jim Valvano - "The lord must have loved ordinary people because he made so many of us."

  2. My favorite quote isn't quite a quote; it's more like a funny little thing that a college friend and I used to say often and still do every now and again.

"Don't do the stupid and everything will be fine."

It's an odd thing to say, I know, but if you think about it, it's not half bad advice. As long as you don't do anything stupid, you won't get yourself into trouble.

  3. A favorite quote that I enjoy and live by would be "grip it and rip it." I'm unsure where it comes from or who said it first but it resonates with me.

  7. "obviously if you build something big enough people are going to have sex in it and burn it down"
This quote has stuck with me for years and was a woman's comment on an article concerning the annual vandalization, arson, etc., that had befallen a Christmas goat that is put up in Sweden called the Gävle Goat. Something just struck me about it and I thought it was funny and a pretty accurate take on humanity.

  8. My favorite quote has motivated me through many aspects in my young life. "The harder you work the harder it is to give in." -Vince Lombardi
I have actually had this quote come true for me multiple times as there were times I wasn't mentally confident. I pit in some extra work and felt so much better going into the test or competition.

  9. "Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow." -Albert Einstein

This is one of my all time favorite quotes because it has three different meanings in it that all come back to each other in the end. The first part is saying that you much learn from the mistakes and joys of yesterday, because you cannot go back there now. The second part means you have to live in the moment because that is how you live life to the fullest and get the most out of your journey. The last part, to me, states that you have no idea if you are even given a tomorrow so you must pray and have faith that you will. Which, bring you back to the living for today and moving on from your past. Another reason this is one of my favorite quotes is because my mother used to say it to my siblings and I every morning before school. Now, I try to tell my roommate this every morning before she heads to class. She loves it more than she is leading on, I know it.

  10. Probably my favorite quote comes from J. R. R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring".
"It's a dangerous business, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you'll be swept off to."

  11. My favorite quote is from Ralph Waldo Emerson, "Self-trust is the first secret of success." As a college student I believe that this is an important lesson to learn, because if you can not trust or believe in yourself you will not succeed or have the confidence to further yourself in education, or work.

  13. "History is written by the winners." This quote was said by my AP US History Jon Iverson, who was also one of my all time favorite teachers. It gave me a new appreciation of history to look deeper into some aspects of history. Gauer

    1. true that, Many Roman victories were recorded by the winners and the casualties were often exaggerated for political aspirations, but their numbers are accurate to a point. the battle of Wattling street in 62 CE/AD, the Briton's casualties were recorded as over 80,000, while modern estimates are still well into the thousands because of the factors of inferior armor and tactics. Romans were also masters of fighting Fixed Battles. Spartacus, Boudicca, and many other enemies of Rome were masters of guerrilla warfare and tactics, but if they absolutely had to fight, they often didn't have the skill or discipline needed to fight the Roman legions head on, no matter the commander or the numbers.
